The International Day of Peace or World Peace Day is observed every year on September 21. It was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. This day offers a globally shared date for the collective to focus on creating a more peaceful world despite our differences.
This year's theme is “Recovering better for an equitable and sustainable world”. It focuses not only on recovering from our personal trauma but the trauma we face as a collective from outdated modes of thinking and how we have treated others since the beginning of human existence. This is a time for us to become more loving and compassionate to ourselves and in turn, become more loving and compassionate to others, creating a safe space for all.
We have the power to change our lives, change our ways of thinking, and change the ways in which treat others. It's a time to come together and support our fellow humans no matter what color their skin, beliefs, or social status. We are all humans having a similar experience here on earth. Let us create a more enjoyable, sustainable, inclusive, healthy, and peaceful place for ourselves and generations to come.
In honor of International Day of Peace, I wanted to share a poem of mine that was recently published in The League of POETS 1st Intercontinental Poetry Anthology. The theme, Voice of Peace.
A Voice of Peace
A voice of peace is gentle and sweet
Hate and greed will soon be obsolete
For when we choose to act with love
We set the example to rise above.
No longer do we discriminate
We make the change to innovate
Working together, raising the bar
Collective intentions will take us far.
It’s up to you, it’s up to me
For what we want this world to be
A voice of peace resides within
The love you share will help us begin.
